AI consulting in Austria costs around 120 euros per hour for an independent consultant, so roughly 1,000 euros per consulting day; agencies charge more. A useful first engagement, a status analysis plus a roadmap, lands between about 2,000 and 5,500 euros. The consulting is rarely the problem. The step after it is: Austrian firms have been buying funded consulting at scale, and only a fraction of it ever turned into a running system.

This guide is for companies with 5 to 200 employees that are about to pay for AI consulting, or already have a consultant report in a drawer. It covers what consulting costs, which funding is still open in 2026, what a consultation must deliver, and why implementation is where most projects stop. The broader overview of AI funding for Austrian firms is in the guide to AI in Austrian small companies; this article is about the gap between the consultant and the working system.

What does AI consulting cost in Austria?

Short answer: plan with 100 to 135 euros per hour, the range in which half of all independent consultants in the DACH region charge according to the Freelancer-Kompass 2026; the median is 120 euros, and consultants who use AI tools charge the same as those who do not. Agencies and larger firms sit above that. The table converts the range into the formats you will actually be offered. The days per format are typical scopes, not quotes, so ask every provider for a fixed price per format.

Is AI consulting still funded in Austria in 2026?

Not through KMU.DIGITAL, the programme most firms used for it. As of 23 September 2026, kmudigital.at states that the budget of KMU.DIGITAL 4.0 is fully used, that applications for consulting and implementation funding are no longer possible, and that the programme will not continue from 2027 because of federal budget consolidation. The last funding call for implementation had only opened on 7 May 2026, according to the aws press release.

Other routes remain: federal programmes through aws and FFG, the consulting grants of the regional chambers and the state-level digitalisation programmes. Which one fits depends on your state and your project, and they change more often than articles get updated. The overview of Austrian AI funding lists the entry points; check the current conditions directly with the funding body before you sign a consulting contract, because almost every programme only covers work that starts after the application.

Apply first, sign second, start third. A consulting day booked before the funding application is usually not eligible. And do not let a grant pick the consultant for you: a funded report that nobody implements is the most expensive consulting there is, because it also costs the months you waited for it.

The real gap: nine consultations, one implementation

The numbers of the largest Austrian digitalisation programme show where the money stops working. Since May 2024, KMU.DIGITAL approved around 16,400 consulting grants worth about 10.5 million euros, but only around 1,800 implementation projects worth about 7.6 million euros (aws). That is roughly one implementation for every nine consultations. On average a consulting grant was worth about 640 euros and an implementation grant about 4,200 euros, our own division of the published totals.

The cost structure explains why. In the Bitkom survey of September 2026, companies that use AI named data preparation (50%) and system integration (41%) as their largest cost blocks, ahead of software licences (21%). The consulting report is the cheap part; connecting the tools, cleaning the data and keeping the system running is the expensive part, and it is exactly the part a consulting engagement usually ends before. In Austria, EY found that only 26% of companies have clearly defined the ROI of their AI applications, so most never get to measure whether the step after worked.

What an AI consultation must deliver

A good consultation ends with something that runs, not with a document. Put these five deliverables into the offer before you sign, and you can hold the consultant to them. The first three also fit into a funded consulting package; the last two are where you learn whether the consultant can take you across the gap. The AI readiness assessment guide explains how to score your starting point beforehand.

1

Three use cases with an owner and a metric

Not twenty ideas, three decisions. Each one names the person who is responsible, the number that should move and the date by which you check it.

2

A map of data and access rights

Which tools hold the answers, who may see what, and what must never go into a prompt. Without it every later step starts with an argument.

3

A one-page AI policy

Rules for use, data and approval, plus the training record the AI Act requires. The AI policy template is a starting point.

4

A first use case running in your tools

Live with real data within weeks, not a slide that describes it. If the consultant cannot show this, the implementation will be a second project with a second budget.

5

An operating model for the day after

Who adds the next use case, who checks the logs, who pays for what each month. A system without an owner is switched off within a year.

Why AI projects stall after the consultant leaves

Four reasons come up again and again, and none of them is the choice of model. Each has a fix you can agree on before the consulting starts.

Consulting alone, a custom project, or consulting plus a platform

After the consultation you have three routes. The table compares them on what matters to a company with 5 to 200 people: money, time to a first result and who operates the system afterwards. The platform figures are the list prices of Teamo AI; other platforms without a seat minimum charge roughly 20 to 50 euros per seat, as the AI platform decision guide shows.

A consultant plus an operating platform

  • The consultant spends the days on your processes, not on plumbing

  • The first use case runs while the consultant is still there

  • Permissions, logs and GDPR paperwork come with the platform

  • Your team adds the next use case without a new offer

A consultant building it from scratch

  • Integration and hosting eat the budget before the first answer

  • Every change is a new consulting day

  • Permissions and audit logs are often postponed to phase two

  • The system depends on one external person

What implementation looks like in production: BASS

For manufacturing firms, one Teamo AI customer shows what the step after the consultation can deliver. BASS, a maker of precision threading tools in Niederstetten, Germany, with about 170 employees, started with its 13-person thread grinding team. Teamo AI was connected to the channels the team already used, WhatsApp included, within a few days and without a new app. After a six-month pilot the team reported scrap down 45% (from 386 to 211 parts per month), improvement actions up 350% (from 0.5 to 2.25 per month) and setup and downtime down 11%. On that basis the management decided to roll Teamo AI out across the company. The figures and the method are on the Teamo AI page.

Two things transfer to Austrian production firms regardless of size. The pilot had one team, one owner and three numbers agreed in advance, which is exactly what most consulting reports leave out. And the decision to scale was made on measured data after six months, not on a slide after the kick-off. For offices, agencies and service firms these particular numbers do not apply; there the metric is usually hours saved per week, which the AI operating system guide for companies with 5 to 200 employees covers.

Teamo AI as the implementation layer behind your consultant

Teamo AI is built to be the part a consultation usually lacks: the system that runs after the consultant leaves. It connects the tools you already use, such as Slack, Teams, Jira, Notion, HubSpot, Pipedrive and your calendar, controls who may see what, runs agents that act in those tools with a person approving every change, and keeps logs. It is hosted in the EU. The one-time setup of 500 to 2,000 euros includes a personal setup, after that it costs 9.97 euros per user and month plus usage-based AI credits, with no seat minimum.

It works with a consultant, not instead of one. A consultant can use Teamo AI as the implementation product behind the analysis, so the funded consulting days go into your processes and the first use case runs before the engagement ends. If you work without a consultant, the 14-day trial lets you connect your first tools yourself. The AI implementation guide and the overview of what an AI operating system is give the wider context.

Key takeaway: buy the consultation for what comes after it

AI consulting in Austria in five sentences

Independent AI consultants charge around 120 euros per hour; an analysis plus roadmap costs about 2,000 to 5,500 euros.

KMU.DIGITAL, the main funding route, is closed: budget used, no applications, no continuation from 2027.

Austrian firms bought about nine funded consultations for every implementation, and data preparation plus integration, not licences, are the largest AI cost blocks.

Put three use cases with owners and metrics, a data map, a policy, a running first use case and an operating model into the offer.

Pair the consultant with a platform that runs after the engagement, so the report becomes a system.
