See how it looksThe Presence Barometer, powered by Martina Sattler, is a free self-assessment of your inner navigation system. It does not measure how high your individual values are, but how coherent they are — how well body, emotions, decisions and actions fit together. You rate 16 statements across eight dimensions on a scale of 1 to 5. The result is a radar profile, your weighted Presence Level, your Coherence Index and your Presence Signature — one of eight patterns that shows how you personally lose and regain presence.

In conversations I am fully present with my thoughts.
I frequently worry about future situations.
I consciously notice tension and my breath in everyday life.
I make decisions mainly with my mind, without consulting my body.
I act from an inner feeling of joy and aliveness.
I act mainly when I feel safe or can estimate the consequences.
I regularly ask myself: what do I want to create right now?
I react to what happens around me instead of shaping things myself.
When I do not want something, I say so clearly.
I agree even when I inwardly feel no.
Most of my relationships give me energy and vitality.
I often feel obliged to give strength to others, even when little remains for myself.
I feel connected to my body and my inner experience.
I feel truly connected to the people around me.
I trust my decisions and act with clarity.
A strong inner urge for perfection often slows me down.
Self-leadership is usually described as discipline: get up earlier, prioritise more clearly, say no more consistently. The Presence Barometer works differently. It does not measure how high your individual scores are but how well they fit together. Eight dimensions, two statements each on a 1-to-5 scale, normalised to 0–100. Time presence and body presence are the leading dimensions and count double — they are the precondition for all the others.
Leading dimension · counts double · dimension 1 of 8
Time presence describes where your attention actually is while your body sits in the meeting. It is low when you are already formulating the answer to the question after next, and when your evening mentally starts on Monday. It is a leading dimension because without it none of the other seven work reliably: if you are not in the now, you can neither perceive your own body nor create real connection.
Your attention is where you physically are
Conversations are held, not prepared in parallel
Breaks are breaks, not shortened work time
The switch between two meetings has a transition
Leading dimension · counts double · dimension 2 of 8
Body presence is the ability to notice physical signals before they get loud. It is the second leading dimension and in leadership profiles often the lowest score of all — especially in people who are otherwise very alert. The typical description is not “I feel nothing“but “I only notice it when it stops working“. Nervous-system regulation and embodiment, the core work of Presence Consulting®, start exactly here.
Tension is noticed before it becomes pain or exhaustion
The body is used as a source of information, not as a vehicle
There are moments in the day without a screen and without a task
Recovery is planned, not taken only after a breakdown
Dimension 3 of 8
Drive asks where your movement comes from: from your own impulse or from an expectation. Both produce activity, but only one of them carries over years. High drive with low body presence is the Visionary pattern — you know exactly where you want to go, your body and your actions have not caught up yet.
The impulse comes from within, not from an expectation
You can name what you work for, not only what you work on
Motivation survives a quarter without confirmation
Dimension 4 of 8
Attention is the ability to set and hold focus deliberately — outward as well as inward. In leaders it is often high, and that is exactly what makes it tricky: high attention with low time and body presence produces the Seeker pattern — often everywhere, rarely at home in yourself.
Focus is set, not determined by the loudest stimulus
Attention turned inward also gets time
Interruptions are decisions, not a given
Dimension 5 of 8
Authenticity measures the match between what you perceive internally and what you show outwardly. Not openness at any price — but the absence of permanent self-misrepresentation. High connectedness with low authenticity is the Adapter pattern: feeling a lot, showing little.
Inside and outside do not permanently diverge
A dissenting opinion does not take excessive effort
You recognise yourself in your professional role
Dimension 6 of 8
Energy is not a question of quantity but of balance: what do you give out, what comes back? Low energy with high connectedness and low authenticity produces the Rescuer pattern — gives a lot, receives little, rarely says no. It is one of the most common profiles among empathetic leaders.
There are activities that give energy back to you
Giving and receiving stand in a ratio across the week
Exhaustion is a signal, not a permanent state
Dimension 7 of 8
Connectedness describes the quality of your relationships — to others and to yourself. In most leaders it is high and therefore rarely the bottleneck. It becomes interesting in relation to authenticity and energy: that tension is exactly what separates sustainable relationships from the ones that slowly empty you.
Relationships hold even without constant performance
There are people around whom you do not have to present anything
The connection to yourself counts as a relationship
Dimension 8 of 8
Effectiveness is the dimension visible on the outside: do your decisions lead to results? It is the score your environment and organisation are most likely to see — and therefore the one that masks low body or time presence the longest. High effectiveness and high attention with low body presence or low drive is exactly the Performer pattern: much doing, little feeling.
Decisions lead to visible results
You can name what is different this quarter because of you
Effectiveness does not arise solely through working more
| Signature | The pattern | Typical constellation |
|---|---|---|
| The Embodied | All values balanced — body, emotion, decision and action are in alignment. | All eight dimensions at least 55, Coherence Index from 75. |
| The Performer | Much doing, little feeling. The body or inner drive barely get a say. | Effectiveness and attention high, body presence or drive low. |
| The Rescuer | Gives a lot. Receives little. Rarely says no. | Connectedness high, energy and authenticity low. |
| The Seeker | Always on the move — outward, forward, to the next impulse. Often everywhere, rarely with yourself. | Attention high, time and body presence low. |
| The Controller | Acts from a need for safety, not from trust. Everything has to be perfect. | Effectiveness low, drive and time presence low. |
| The Visionary | Great inner power, not yet grounded. Body and actions have not caught up. | Drive and attention high, body presence and effectiveness low. |
| The Adapter | Feels a lot. Shows little. Adapts. | Connectedness high, authenticity and energy low. |
| The Analyst | Understands everything. Feels little. Understanding has taken over from feeling. | Time presence high, body presence and drive low. |
The core value of the barometer is not the Presence Level but the Coherence Index. It comes from four tensions — time and body presence (being and grounding), drive and effectiveness (feeling to acting), authenticity and connectedness (showing to connecting), attention and energy (creating to power) — and is calculated per pair as 100 minus the distance between the two values. That is the decisive difference from a classic self-test: two high scores side by side are not a good result if they sit far apart. That distance is exactly what explains why self-leadership often does not work through discipline alone — and it is where Presence Consulting® starts, with nervous-system regulation and embodiment. How presence additionally shows on the outside is covered in Executive presence as a leader.
Rate every statement from 1 to 5 across the eight dimensions.
Each dimension is normalized to 0-100; the Presence Level weights the two leading dimensions double.
Four dimension pairs show how well feeling, showing, creating and acting fit together.

The three strategy families behind self-leadership, what 16,493 observations say about their effect, where the concept is oversold, and how to measure your own.

Executive presence is the ability to project calm confidence, credibility, and composure under pressure so that others trust your leadership. Research by Sylvia Ann Hewlett shows it rests on gravitas (about 67%), communication (about 28%), and appearance (about 5%), and senior leaders say it accounts for roughly 26% of what it takes to get promoted. The good news: every component is trainable, and you can measure your starting point in minutes with a free self-check.
